Wendell Morris Powell, 85, of Morganton, NC, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2025.
Born in Burke County, NC on September 4, 1940, he was the son of the late Willie Morris Powell and Beatrice Branch Powell.
Wendell was a member of Winkler's Grove Baptist Church and a member of Lovelady Masonic Lodge #670 for over 60 years where he served as Grand District Lecturer for the district. Wendell loved his family and enjoyed his work, and he was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Carolyn Brown Powell; daughter, Wendy Powell; son, Todd Powell (Robin); grandchildren, Terra McGee, Tyler Powell (Gracie), and Taylor Powell; great-grandchildren, Addison, Weston, Presleigh, Chesni, and Teal; sisters, Brenda Digh (Terry) and Delores Sossoman (Joel); and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Wendell’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, October 13, 2025 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

I am so sorry to hear of Wendell's passing. I sure thought a lot of him. I met him 37 years ago when I was working at Baker Furniture. I used to see him out buying veneer and always enjoyed talking to him. Todd, I'll be thinking of your family.
I'm so very sorry to hear of Wendell's passing. Wendell was a great man and a kind man. One of the titans of the wood veneer face industry. I really regret that I didn't get to see him in the last several years. Please accept my most sincere condolences. Kevin Jones
