Committal
Roger Walter Moon, 72, of Morganton, NC passed away, Monday, August 28, 2023. Born on August 4, 1951, he was the son of the late Shelley Walter and Alta Rutledge Moon. Roger was a member of First Baptist Church of Morganton. He received his undergraduate degree from Greensboro College and went on to receive his Master’s in Rehabilitation Psychology from Appalachian State University. Roger retired as the Western Region Director, NC Division of Prisons. For the past several years, he served as the General Manager of Mimosa Hill Golf Club. Roger loved spending time with his friends and family and playing golf.
Roger is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rebecca “Becca” Martin Moon; son, Jeffrey Moon (Ashley); daughter, Allison Moon Buff (Jamie); grandchildren, Sawyer, Dylan, Hawkins Buff, Owen Moon; sister, Kay Childres (Ronny).
The family will receive friends from 1pm until 3pm, Saturday, September 2, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Morganton. A Celebration of Life will follow in the church at 3pm, with Rev. Fred Schuszler and Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. Honors will be provided by the NC Department of Corrections.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation, who will designate contributions to the UNC Health Blue Ridge Cancer Center.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Roger was a great guy and a mentor to a lot of people. Becca, just know that Roger is in a better place, he has gone home.
Roger and I attended Greensboro College together. Later we worked together in a sales and marketing profession. I always enjoyed working with Roger and calling on customers. He was a consumate professional. He was a great friend and and fantastic person. Grace & Peace for a life well lived.
Mr. Moon was my first Regional director and always thought the sun rose in me. He’d always push for me to be and do better, and always had my back. He was a great man to look up to ! My Condolences to his Family & friends. God rest your soul brother!

Gramps was the best
Roger never missed the opportunity to show you that he cared about you. First he covered you up with that big smile, a handshake, maybe a pat on the back, followed by “how’s Gay”, “what about your boys in Texas?” Even though we didn’t see each other socially Roger was a friend I could count. Heaven is a better place with Roger’s ascent there. To the family, my sympathy to all of you for your Loss.
You are all in my prayers during this difficult time especially. I’m so glad we became friends. May you know the comfort of the Holy Spirit. May the peace of God fill your hearts and minds and give you strength.
