Ralph Junior Powell, 89, of Morganton, NC went to his heavenly home on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

He was born on June 9, 1934 in Burke County to the late James Powell and Telitha Branch Powell.

Ralph loved the mountains, the Linville River, and being outdoors as much as possible. He was a gentle soul loved by all who knew him. He loved to laugh and make people laugh, and if he loved you, he loved you with everything in him. He was a member of the Marion Moose Lodge and enjoyed hanging out with his buddies there. Ralph enjoyed reading, including Louie Lamour and the Our Daily Bread scriptures. He was proud to have served his country in the Navy for 21 years only to continue as a devoted postal worker for 20 years. He is already truly missed every day.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Knight Powell; children, Teresa Farmer (James), Robbie Poole Edwards, and Robert Cantrell, Jr (Patsy); ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughters, Sharon Owens and Debbie Green; his brothers George, Glen, John, Jerry, Roland, Odel, and Ray; his sisters AnnaRea and Zula.

Services for Mr. Powell have been cancelled.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Care Partners Hospice.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory center is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ralph was such a wonderful uncle, he always made me special and loved. My family loved being around him also. I regret I did not visit more often because I always enjoyed his sense of humor. I loved him and he will be missed.

Ralph was a good uncle to me. I have always loved seeing his smile and hearing his chuckle. I just wished I could have spent more time with him over the years. Life is to complex these days and we really need to slow down and enjoy the time we have. Love you uncle Ralph ❤️
