Ralph Junior Powell, 89, of Morganton, NC went to his heavenly home on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

He was born on June 9, 1934 in Burke County to the late James Powell and Telitha Branch Powell.

Ralph loved the mountains, the Linville River, and being outdoors as much as possible. He was a gentle soul loved by all who knew him. He loved to laugh and make people laugh, and if he loved you, he loved you with everything in him. He was a member of the Marion Moose Lodge and enjoyed hanging out with his buddies there. Ralph enjoyed reading, including Louie Lamour and the Our Daily Bread scriptures. He was proud to have served his country in the Navy for 21 years only to continue as a devoted postal worker for 20 years. He is already truly missed every day.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Knight Powell; children, Teresa Farmer (James), Robbie Poole Edwards, and Robert Cantrell, Jr (Patsy); ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughters, Sharon Owens and Debbie Green; his brothers George, Glen, John, Jerry, Roland, Odel, and Ray; his sisters AnnaRea and Zula.

Services for Mr. Powell have been cancelled.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Care Partners Hospice.

Janet and family, My heart goes out to you, I wish I could be there. I The memories we made together: vacations at Key West, Key Largo, and navy reunions will always be a part of me. Ralph could always make me laugh, he was a great person and will be missed. I have to think that Ralph and Jim are having their own reunion and reminiscing about old times. Carole sends her condolences, she only met Ralph at the one reunion but said he made her laugh (remember the white dress)! Love you Janet, Your friend, Margaret.

I miss my dad. He was a great person, and a kind soul. I miss going to the cabin with him and seeing Uncle Bob and Aunt Janet. I miss swimming with him in the River. I miss going every weekend to Jamestown Flea Market and looking at everything. I remember him teaching me to play pool. Spending hours playing game after game. I even think he let me beat him sometimes. He was the best dad I could ask for.

—Matthew Powell

I miss Ralph so much already. He always made me feel very special and loved. I spent all my summers with him in Florida, from 5 to 16 years of age. So many fishing trips, Disney trips, so many first time experiences! And he taught me things too, like a Dad would. I guess he was my summertime Dad. Linville River won't be the same. Love you Uncle Ralph. ❤

Uncle Ralph was one of the sweetest uncles anyone could wish for! He always welcomed new family members with open arms, and was just so ready with a smile and a laugh. He was truly a joy to know and love! Sending warm sympathies to Aunt Janet. We wish we could be with you there and send hugs and love.
