Michael Douglas “Doug” Lackey, 70, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2026.

Born in Morganton, NC on May 14, 1955, he was the son of the late Willard Wayne Lackey and Beulah Feimster Lackey.

Doug retired from Leviton Manufacturing after giving them 45 years of service. He volunteered his time with the Valdese Fire Department for many years. Some of his most impactful works were the time he spent coaching in Burke County. He coached little league baseball and softball as well as industrial league. The lives he touched from coaching and teaching continue to reverberate today. Doug was an avid outdoorsman spending his time riding horses, fishing, hiking, and becoming an excellent deer hunter. He was most proud of his grandchildren. When not in the woods, he could be found enjoying westerns along with his faithful German Shepard, Ruger.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brother Howard Wayne Lackey, and sister Christine Geraldine (Dene) Bertalot.

Doug is survived by Roxanne Hughes of the home who he spent the happiest years of his life with; children, Will Lackey (Tamara), April Ray (John), and Jason McCracken; grandchildren, Ethan & Hannah Lackey, Kailey & Devin Ray, and Autumn McCracken; great-grandchild, Eric Meek.

Doug will be remembered as a principled man who lived a simple life and only wanted the best for those he loved.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be a private family service at a later date.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
