Joan Chappell, 92, of Morganton, NC passed away Monday, March 30, 2026.
Born in Burke County, NC on September 19, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Columbus Conley and Julia Ellen Fox Conley.
Joan was a faithful member of Walker Road Baptist Church and former member of Southside Baptist, and she faithfully read her Bible every day. She taught Sunday school, worked in the nursery, and loved to take care of children. Joan enjoyed crotchet and sewing, and she checked on her neighbors every day.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Susan Ingram (Ken), Doris White (Danny), Jane Roberts, and Nancy Kirk; seventeen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Betty Browne; and a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Powell; and sisters, Doris Smith and Thelma Conley.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev Mark Ball officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Jonathan Kirk for all his help with caring for Joan.

Joan was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met. During our time serving at Walker Road she was always such an encourager and light to everyone who came in contact with her. My prayers are with her family during this sad time! I know Joan is having the best time sitting at the feet of Jesus!!

I work with Joan for years at grace hospital, she witnessed everday to everyone she was around always speaking about her Jesus to everyone, sweet mother and sweet dear friend , she was faithful and a Jesus lady🙏 prayers for the family . She served Him well. Love and prayers Linda Causby
