Jerry “George” William Rhyne, born April 26, 1942, age 82 of Glen Alpine, went to be with his Heavenly Father on July 24, 2024 after an extended period of declining health.

George is survived by his 3 sons: Alan (Vance), Keith and Richard Rhyne, his 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, brothers Kenneth Rhyne (Alice) of Glen Alpine, Patrick Rhyne (Gayle) of Fayetteville, sister Patricia Walker (Warren) of Leland and close neighbors and friends Cynthia and Josephine and the mother of his children Martha Lequire Hughes of Murphy.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Edith Campbell Rhyne of Saltville, VA and formerly of Valdese, his father Denver Finley Rhyne of Avery County, and brothers Claude (Bob) Campbell and Vance Jones.

George worked for the City of Morganton in the solid waste department and in the textile industry for over 30 years. He loved hunting and fishing and taught his 3 sons the sport of each. He always followed and supported his sons in sports and never missed a game. He was very proud of his sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman who some called the, “Mayor of the Spillway”. George was not one for gossip and would lend a hand to anyone in need. He lived a quiet life with his cats and often took day trips with his son Keith, who helped care for him at the end of his life. George will be missed by many, but especially his family, who suspect he entered the Gates of Heaven, only long enough to grab a fishing pole to head to the Eternal Lake for fishing and to catch up with those who had gone before him.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life service at a later date.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

My Uncle George was a very interesting individual to say the least . I will always love ,respect and admire him. He overcame several obstacles in his life that a lot of people will never accomplish . He taught me everything I know about hunting and fishing and poker . In his honor I have tried to pass it on to my son. I have many fond memories and experiences with him from my growing up teenage years . I will cherish that forever . He will be missed. I love George. Tell Edith Hello .
