Jane Crouch, 92, of Morganton, NC was called to her Heavenly home on December, 31, 2023. She was born on January 2, 1931 in Guilford County to the late George Washington Stephens and Mary Richardson Stephens. As a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Morganton for over 70 years, Jane served in many capacities, including 3rd grade Sunday school teacher, youth counselor, member of the Board of Churches, member of the committee to organize a young adult Sunday School, President, Teacher, and active member of the Aldersgate Sunday School Class for 65 years, President of the UMC Women, and Chair of the Bereavement Committee. Jane also served as Regent and Vice-Regent of the Quaker Meadows chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Treasurer of the Jr. Women’s Club, Lt. Governor of Ladies Optimist Club of Western N.C. District, a Grace Hospital volunteer, and member of the Pilot Club.

Jane worked for the Burke County Department of Social Services for 32 years as an administrative assistant, retiring in 1994. She grew up in Wilmington, NC but moved to Durant, OK after the 9th grade where she finished high school and completed college courses at Southeastern Teachers College. She then moved to Morganton in 1950 where she met and married her husband, Clarence, in 1952. Jane and Clarence enjoyed many years together with their friends in Morganton playing bridge, dancing, and socializing. She was an avid reader and enjoyed baking, flower arranging, needle work, and sewing. Intensely devoted to God, her husband, and her family, Jane’s children described her as a one-of-kind incredible matriarchal woman.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Jane was preceded in death by her twin brother, Billy Stephens; half-brothers, Wiley Stephens, and Ernest Stephens; and grandson Curtis Baker.

Jane is survived by her children, Ronald Crouch (Tia), Beverly Crouch Lyons (David), and David Crouch (Debbie); grandchildren, Austin Crouch (Clarissa), Madison Swaim (Trey), Bryan Triebert, Duncan Triebert, Aleigh Miranda (Marvin), Nicholas Huston-Lyons, Isaac Crouch, Samuel Crouch (Jerrica), Callie Crouch Moore (Daniel), and Brandon Baker; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Olivia, Jacob, River, Florence, Breanna, Anna, Austin, Scarlett, Sawyer and Hattie; great-great-grandchildren, Eleanor and Madelyn; half-sister, Susie Edwards and half-brother, Roy Stephens.

A memorial service will be at 2pm, Sunday, January 21, 2023 at First United Methodist Church of Morganton with Rev. Dana McKim officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Inurnment is private.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Morganton, First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, NC or to South Mountain Children’s Home.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
