James “Trey” Conley Mitchell III

James “Trey” Conley Mitchell III, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2026, at his home in Saxapahaw, NC. He was 50 years old and had been battling health issues for the past few years.

Born in Morganton, NC on November 20, 1975, he was the son of James Conley Mitchell Jr. and the late Rebecca Pitts Mitchell. After moving to Jamestown, Trey was a graduate of Ragsdale High School and worked at Jamestown Park Golf Course for many years. Having a passion for landscaping, he opened his own landscape business.

Trey was an avid golfer and through golf, Trey made many great friends and created memories that he enjoyed sharing throughout the years. As much as Trey loved golf, he loved being on the lake in his boat, with his family even more. Texting and calling for plans to go to the lake would start early in the week, talking the kids into taking off work to enjoy a day on the lake.

Even off the lake, Trey centered his life around family. He loved visiting with his dad on almost a daily basis, talking about football, golf, or various other topics, being a constant friend and supporter of his sister, and sitting by the fireplace with his father-in-law.

Trey, survived by his wife, Ashley, enjoyed many years together. From the trips and adventures to the quiet moments in the evenings, they truly enjoyed each other’s company. Trey was the dad that stepped up to become the best dad to Grayson, Alayna and Aubrey. Teaching them how to drive, ski, and how to bypass mom and go to him when they needed money, he admitted he could never say no to his kids. From midnight runs with Grayson or plotting with the girls to run to get snacks and take-out at all hours of the night, he definitely had partners in crime. Trey was also so proud to be Big Daddy to his grandson, Adonis. He loved watching him grow up and so looked forward to having a little side kick when he got a little older.

Trey is survived by his wife, Ashley Mitchell; children, Grayson Morris, Alayna Morris (Reign) and Aubrey Whitesell; grandson, Adonis; father, James Conley Mitchell Jr.; sister, Jenny Mitchell Vestal; father-in-law, Terry Johnson; sister-in-laws, Kim Lynds (Mike), Jaime Moyer (Keith); nephews, Spencer Vestal (Gabe), Shawn Moyer; nieces, Gracie Vestal, Samantha, Savannah, and Sabrina Lynds.

Trey will lie in state from 12pm until 4pm, Thursday, January 22, 2026 and from 9am until 11am, Friday, January 23, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home.

Services will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 with the burial service being held at Burke Memorial Park at 12pm and the funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Morganton at 1pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the PKD Foundation.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
