Bobby Gene Powell, 89, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

Born in Cherokee County, SC on February 1, 1936, he was the son of the late Lewis Edgar Powell and Jessie Upchurch Powell.

Bobby was a long-time member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Bobby loved his family and church family. He enjoyed reading, listening to gospel and bluegrass music, and gardening. He was a simple, devout, Christian man and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Keith Mayfield (Janie), Jessie “Polly” Powell Presnell (Greg), Bobby Powell, Jr., and Dennis “Randy” Powell (special friend, Ken); grandchildren, Stephen and Jessica (Tim); great-grandchildren, Gabby and Justin; step-grandchildren, Luke and Megan; step-great-grandchildren, Landre and Shelby; sister-in-law, Minky Powell; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Elizabeth Mayfield Powell; three brothers, David, Wayne, and Joe Powell; and a sister, Pat Boyd.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Jeffrey Beach officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cross Memorial Baptist Church, Grace Heights Health and Rehab, or to Amorem Hospice.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

To All The Family, I am so sorry that Bobby has left us so soon. He was such a kind and gentle man who loved the Lord and shared that with everyone. He was a wonderful Sunday School teacher and took time to explain the lesson so well you felt like you were in that Biblical era. I appreciated him and tried to let him know through notes and cards.
