Alan Scott Powell, 62, of Morganton, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2024 after a courageous battle with ALS. Born in Burke County on April 29, 1961, he was the son of the late Paul Winford Powell and Ruby Nell Scott Powell. Alan retired in January from Siegwerk, formerly Environmental Inks, after 40 years of service. An accomplished athlete, he excelled at tennis, softball and golf. He recorded 2 hole-in-one's at Silver Creek Plantation. He was a strong Christian, a faithful member of Burkemont Baptist Church where he participated in missions, the Passion play and was very active in his Sunday School class. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Someone you could always count on.

He is survived by his sister, Paula Powell Crump; brother-in-law, Doug Crump; niece, Hollee Hord; nephew Darren Hord; aunt, Elaine Buchanan; girlfriend, Traci Skeggs; numerous cousins who he loved dearly and a host of friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Alan's life will be held Friday, February 16, 2024 with visitation at 11:00 am and service at 12:00 pm at Burkemont Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddy Bunton officiating. Burial will be in Glen Alpine Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed by the church on the church website or Facebook page.

The family would like to thank the members of Burkemont Baptist Church for all of the love and support they showered on Alan during his illness. Also thanks to Debbie McCurry for her kindness as his caregiver. To the staff of Magnolia Lane Nursing and Rehab Facility, there are no words to express our gratitude for all of the love and care given to Alan and our whole family. We are forever grateful.

Memorials may be sent to Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Rd, Morganton NC 28655 or to ALS Association, P.O. Box 37022, Boone, IA 50037-0022

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Alan was a great guy. I worked with him many years ago at EIC. Roger and I will be praying for the family; that God's tender mercy and love be with you all during this difficult time. Roger and Michelle McCoy

Dear Paula and family, Alan was a wonderful person, athlete, and friend. I'll never forget the times we shared growning up playing baseball together and golf later in life. God bless the Powell family and cause His face to shine on you all now and forevermore.

Hours and hours of front yard and back yard and side yard football and basketball growing up in our neighborhood in Glen Alpine. Alan was somewhat the "runt of the neighborhood" when we were growing up, being a couple of years younger and a couple of inches shorter than most of us (he didn't have his growth spurt until later), but he was tenacious and loyal and extremely gifted as an athlete. I lost track of Alan after I graduated High School, and sadly, we never had a chance to reconnect. But, I will always think of him as one of my "friends from the 'hood" and have many fond memories of our times as children playing sports together. My love to Paula and the family. We are so sorry that ALS claimed another dear friend. Richard and Maureen

Alan was a good man who loved God and his family. He was a good friend to so many people and he surely will be missed. ALS is such a horrible disease but I prefer to think of you healed and walking the streets of gold and eating at the Master's table and of course playing golf!
