Winston "Sonny" Wilson, 94, of Harris Drive, Morganton, NC died Friday, June 18, 2010 at the Burke Palliative Care Center in Valdese, NC. Born in Burke County, NC on October 28, 1915, he was the son of the late S. E. Wilson and Gertrude White Wilson. Sonny attended Snow Hill United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army infantry veteran of WWII. He participated in D-day and received the Purple Heart for being wounded on Thanksgiving day while serving in Germany. Sonny retired from the Morganton Post Office after 20 years of service.He is survived by his wife, Inez Carswell Wilson of the home; brothers, Charles E. Wilson and wife, Katherine, and Andrew W. Wilson and wife, Loree, all of Morganton; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Warlick, Edith Hope Wilson, and Sue Widenhouse.The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 21, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Valdese American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to Snow Hill United Methodist Church, 5425 Snow Hill Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
