Windell H. Nichols, 87, of US 70 East in Morganton died Monday, August 3, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Cherokee County, NC on December 28, 1921 to the late James Monroe Nichols and Minnie Morgan Nichols. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Faye Nichols. Prior to World War II, Windell worked with the Conservation Corps and helped build Fontana Dam. He served in the US Army during World War II, and was part of the Normandy Invasion. Following his war service, Windell worked for Great Lakes Carbon until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Drexel.He is survived by his wife, Ruth Rogers Nichols of the home; and sons, James Terrell Nichols, Buddy Keith Nichols, and Tony Gene Nichols; 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Trinity Baptist Church with the Reverends Scott Moneyham and Finley McCurry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke County Camp Meeting, c/o Scott Moneyham, 3333 Trinity Church Rd., Valdese, NC 28690. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
