William J. "Bill" Gamble

William J. "Bill" Gamble, Jr., 88, of Rockview Lane, Morganton, NC died Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Grace Heights. Born in Gaston County, NC on April 27, 1921, he was the son of the late William J. Gamble, Sr. and Beulah O’Brien Gamble. Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University. He worked for the state of NC for over 40 years as a state auditor, business manager of NCSD, and retired from Broughton Hospital as assistant director. He was a member of the Morganton Kiwanis Club, a Mason, a Shriner, and the Scottish Rite.Bill is survived by his wife, Anne Crawley Gamble of the home; a daughter, Judy Walker of Fairfax, VA; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Somes Gamble of Hattiesburg, MS; a sister, Grace LaDuke of Bessemer City, NC; grandchildren, Sterling Yager, Ashton Walker, Amy, Ginny, and Elizabeth Gamble; and a great-grandson, Crew Yager.In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Phillips Gamble; a son, William J. Gamble, III; and a sister, Rachel Carew.A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 25, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church in Morganton with Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 100 Silver Creek Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
