William Edward "Bill" Cline, 90, of Drexel, NC, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Born March 6, 1922 in Burke County, NC, he was a son of the late Joseph Eli Cline and Blanche Ida Walker Cline. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Bill was an active member of Drexel First Church of God where he served on the Board of Trustees, managed the church building fund, and was the head usher. Bill was a former Fire Chief of the Drexel Fire Department, served on the Drexel City Council, and was a past president of the Drexel Lions Club. He also designed argyle socks for the Ralph Lauren clothing line while working at Drexel Knitting Mills.He is survived by a daughter, Haven Renee Cline Perrou of Raleigh; grandchildren, Newana Shuffler of Drexel, Ben and Molly Perrou, Candace and Scott McCandless, all of Raleigh, and Natalie Brooke Perrou of Cary; five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; brothers, Glenn Cline and wife, Betty, of Drexel, Ned Cline and wife, Juanita, and Joe Ben Cline and wife, Faye, all of Morganton; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Cline of Drexel and Ruth Cline of Morganton.In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Louise Franklin Cline; a daughter, Billie Kay Cline Witkus; brothers, Vernon, Max, and Fred Ray Cline; and sisters, Barbara Watts and Frances Cline.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Drexel First Church of God with the Reverends Steve Greer and Don Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the Lower Narthex of the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
