William Dennis "Bill" Campbell, Jr. of Amherst Road, Morganton, NC, passed away Sunday, September 10th, 2006 at Grace Heights Nursing Home following a period of declining health.
Born August 26, 1922 in Charlottesville, VA, he was the son of William D. Campbell, Sr. and Eunola Leta Kounse Campbell. Bill is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years; Iva Mae Spooner Campbell and his sister, Sylvia L. Saunders.
Bill attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, prior to serving his country in the United Sates Army during WWII. He received a Masters Degree in Special Education from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC in 1966. Following several years of teaching at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC, Bill pursued his career in printing and retired from The Hickory Daily Record in 1987.
Bill was an avid sportsman, model airplane and model train enthusiast. His love of life and family was contagious to all who knew and loved him. Recently, Bill celebrated his 84th birthday surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Velma L. Campbell and husband, Ross Vincent, of Pueblo, CO; a son, W. Dennis Campbell, III of Asheville, NC; and a daughter, Patti C. Williams and husband, Rex, of Morganton. Also surviving are grandchildren, Rusty Williams and wife, Tammy of Glen Alpine, NC, Jaime Williams and fiancé, Ben Handley of Morganton, Laura and Julia Chappell-Campbell of Asheville, NC. Great-grandchildren are Zackary and Hunter Williams of Glen Alpine and Bryson Handley of Morganton.
Services will be held Thursday, September 14th, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Holly Cobb Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Memorial Methodist Church Cemetery in Drexel, NC with military graveside rites to be conducted by the Ceremonial Team of Valdese American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Sossoman Funeral Home.
