Under Carolina blue skies, William “Bill” Alexander Kendall, 84, of Morganton passed away while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 22, 2020.  Born in Cleveland County, NC on June 25, 1936, he was the son of the late Dr. Benjamin Horton Kendall and Ruby Emma Spratt Kendall.

Bill served in the US Air National Guard.  He graduated from Shelby High School, received his undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill, and earned his graduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta, GA.  In his later years, Bill wrote two unpublished manuscripts: “I May Yet Return” based on civil letters written by his great-great-grandfather and “How to Develop and Maintain Accurate Product Costing” based on his many years of experience in the furniture industry.

Bill was an active member of First United Methodist Church.  Over the years he served on various committees including Chairman of the Administrative Board and Finance Committee.

He was active in the community.  He was a member of the Jaycees, a past president of the Kawanis Club; and a past president and district governor of the Optimist Club.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters.  He held “mini classes” for them, teaching them life and finance skills.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sarah Joyce Jefferies Kendall of the home; son, Jeffrey Alexander Kendall; daughter, Sara Lynne Kendall Mauney (Glenn); and granddaughters, Kiele Mauney and Lani Mauney.

Due to the on-going health crisis, a private memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Catawba Memorial Park Mausoleum with Rev. Dana McKim officiating.  Those wishing to participate may view the service live by going to facebook.com/fumcmorganton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Gilboa Restoration Fund, 200 N. King Street, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
