Walter “Walt” Wheeler, 78, of Morganton, NC, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2026.

Born in San Bernardino, California on July 9, 1948, he was the son of the late Albert Walter Wheeler and Evelyn Grabow Rhoades.

Walt was a veteran of both the US Marine Corps and the US Army, and he served in the Vietnam War. He enjoyed fishing, riding motorcycles, and making people laugh, and he owned and operated Wheeler Enterprises.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 38 years, Norma Daphene Branch Wheeler; son, Justin Wheeler (Christina) and Kenneth Lee Woody (Janie); daughters, Julia Ann Peterson, and Yvonne Holman; step-son, Robert “Scott” Woody; grandchildren, Brianna Wheeler, Cooper Wheeler, Levi Woody, Kalyssa Elliot, and 22 others; nephew, Daniel Wheeler (Theia); and a great-niece, Presley Wheeler.

In addition to his parents, Walt was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Brown.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 13, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Rocky McLendon officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
