Walter Pinkney Lane, 87, of Morganton, NC died Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the Burke Palliative Care Center following a period of declining health. Born in Burke County, NC on July 6, 1924, he was the son of the late Ned Lane and Sarah Elizabeth Roper Lane. Walter was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, during which he had been a prisoner of war. While growing up he attended Salem schools and was a retired employee of Henredon Furniture Company. Mr. Lane was a member of Denton’s Chapel United Methodist Church.Walter is survived by his daughter, Janet Lane Farris and husband, Dwight, of Morganton; a grandson, Matthew Walter Farris and wife, Lori Johnson Farris, of Morganton; a granddaughter, Lindsay LeeAnn Farris of Morganton; great-grandchildren, Gracie Loren Farris and Walter Pinkney Farris; a sister, Elsie Lane Denton; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Lou Fisher Lane; a daughter, Jean Elizabeth; brothers, Will, Shuford, Luke, and Lonnie Lane; and a sister, Anne Deal.The funeral will be held at noon, Friday, July 15, 2011 at Denton’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Cynthia Arnold officiating. Entombment will follow in Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Denton’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 5358 Denton’s Chapel Road, Morganton, NC 28655.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.The family would like to give a special thanks to Carolina Rehab, Valdese Hospital ICU and Burke Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate help during this difficult time.
