Vincent Davis Childress of Morganton, NC, age 90, passed away on June 12, 2014. He was born February 23, 1924 in Martinsville, Virginia, the son of Sidney Pyrant Childress and Maude Davis Childress.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean Covington Childress, two sons: Vincent Childress, Jr., and his daughter, Diana, of Asheville, N.C. and Everett Childress and wife, Beth, and daughters, Latham and Kendall, of Jamestown, NC. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Jones and brother, Sidney Holland Childress, both of High Point, NC. Also, he is survived by two nieces, a nephew, and their children.

Vincent was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army in the Southwest Pacific, including New Guinea, New Britain, the Philippines and in the initial occupation of Japan. After serving his country, he returned to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1949, being a life long enthusiastic follower of the Tar Heels sports teams. He was employed for over 30 years in management positions with Drexel Heritage Furnishings, both in High Point and Drexel, N.C.

In Morganton, Vincent was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where he served as head usher for over twenty years and served on its vestry. He was a member of the Morganton Kiwanis Club, having served as its President in 1997 and having been named its Man of the Year in 1999. He was also a charter member of the Catawba Valley chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. An avid golfer, Vincent played regularly several times a week at Quaker Meadows Golf Course, including even the week preceding his death.

A service celebrating his life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, Morganton, NC on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 11 a.m. Memorial gifts in his honor may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South King Street, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
