Roy “Vernon” Roper, 92, of Morganton, NC went to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, April 28, 2023. He was born on March 27, 1931 in Burke County to the late Haywood Roper and Flossie Bailey Roper. Vernon was a member of Burkemont Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school. He loved his church and church family very much. He worked on the farm at Broughton Hospital for forty years. Mr. Roper was a veteran of the US Army.

He is survived by five nieces and one nephew; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Carswell.

In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years (together for 74 years), Annie Pearson Roper; brothers, David Roper and William Roper; and sisters, Jean Watts and Revonda Ross.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Burkemont Baptist Church. The funeral will begin at 3 p.m. in the church with Revs. Dr. Eddy Bunton and Dr. Luke Lane officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by US Army.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Road, Morganton, NC 28655 or to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
