Vernon Ray Powell, 66, of Morganton, died Friday, May 6, 2016. Born in Burke County, NC on September 19, 1949, he was a son of Margaret Stamey Powell and the late Manley James Powell. Vernon was a member of Glen Alpine First Baptist Church and was an ordained minister. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family dearly.
In addition to his father, Vernon was preceded in death by his first wife, Lee Powell and a brother, Jerry Lee Powell.
In addition to his mother, Vernon is survived by his wife, Betty Fowler Powell of the home; daughters, Maria Powell Ward, (Harold), Rhonda Powell Peeler, (Mark), and Kimberly Fowler Brown, (David); sons, Michael Ray Powell, (fiancé, Kasey Cline), James Fowler, (Leslie); sisters, Iris Powell Ramsey, (Warren), Carolyn Powell Dale, (Russell), Elizabeth Powell Cook, (Robert); brothers, Manley James Powell, Jr., Charles Edward Powell, (Ann); grandchildren, Richard and Casey Bowman, Carson Powell, Hunter, Hampton, and Morgan Brown; and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, May 9, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Glen Alpine First Baptist Church with Pastors John Terry, Sidney Hall of Jamaica, and Dennis Hensley officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at Burke Memorial Park.
