Verlie Denton Wellman Deaton, 84, of Morganton, was called home peacefully on Thursday, October 5, 2018.  Born in Burke County on June 23, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Forrest Denton, Sr. and Annie Thacker Denton.  Verlie was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  She was a former employee of NCSD and Burke Mills.

Verlie is survived by her daughter, Bettye Wellman Baird (David); daughter-in-law, Rachel Wellman Morris; grandchildren, Jonathan D. Baird (Megan), Timothy D. Baird (Marla), Jeffrey E. Wellman (Melissa), and Kimberly Wellman; 10 great-grandchildren including Taylor Christine Lane, who lived with her for the past 9 years; sisters, Lela Setzer, Lucy Chapman, and Doris Smith; and brothers, Jerry Denton (Loretta) and Donald Denton (Freda).

In addition to her parents, Verlie was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Carles Wellman; second husband, Billy D. Deaton; son, Michael “Mike” Wellman; stillborn son, Randy Wellman; brothers, Forrest “Jay” Denton, Jr., Ray Denton, and John Denton; and sister, Edna “Bob” Denton.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday, October 8, 2018 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  The memorial service will follow at 12 p.m. in the old sanctuary of the church with Dr. Jack Hodges, Rev. Jerry Gamble, and Donald Denton officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690 or to the Graceful Giving Fund at Mt. Home Baptist Church, 2272 Mt. Home Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
