Tommy Taylor, 76, of Morganton, NC, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Born in Burke County, NC on March 2, 1950, he was the son of the late Joseph Robert Taylor and Margaret Taylor Propst.

Tommy was a member of Zion Baptist Church for over 40 years and had served as a greeter and an usher. Mr. Taylor also served for over 30 years in law enforcement, having worked at the Morganton Department of Public Safety, NC Division of Motor Vehicles, and the Department of Corrections. Tommy was an avid golfer and bowler, and he was a member of a bowling league for over 20 years. He was also a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Ashley Taylor (Keri); daughter, Candace White (Zach); granddaughters, Briar White, and Adrianna Taylor; grandson, Landon Taylor; significant other, Ruth Ann; and a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Renѐ Mull Taylor; brothers, Danny and Bobby Taylor; and sister, Hilda Taylor Adkins.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, May 17, 2026 at Zion Baptist Church. A celebration of Tommy’s life will follow at 3 p.m. in the church with Rev. Keith Rose officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Baptist Church, 3394 Pea Ridge Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Tommy was the first officer to pull me over .. I had just gotten my license.. he clocked me at 55 in a 35.. I told him my mom and dad were going to kill me for being late getting homr.. he told me that my mom and dad were going to feel a lot worse if I didn't make it home.. then we meet again at Zion BC.. Great man.. u will be missed..
