Thomas “Tom” Maye, 70, of Morganton, NC passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017.  Born in Burke County, NC on November 29, 1946, he was the son of the late James “Jim” Maye and Ruby Whisenant Maye.  Tom was a member of First Baptist Church.

He retired from the North Carolina School for the Deaf with over 30 years of service.  Tom coached for many years at the school and taught driver’s education.  He was a member of the NCSD Foundation and was the chair of the foundation’s Bear’s Classic Golf Tournament.  Mr. Maye was instrumental in the establishment of the Alder Springs Deaf and Blind Community.

Tom was an avid golfer and a member of the Mimosa Country Club.  He was a fan of the UNC Tarheels and the Freedom High School basketball team.

Mr. Maye is survived by his wife of 46 years, Stephanie Earlene Bowers Maye of the home; sister, Mary Lynn Morgan and husband, Greg, of Belmont, NC; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Sommers of Greenville, SC, Anne Bowers Riggan and husband, Rev. Joseph Holland; brother-in-law, Freddie Bowers and wife, Phyllis; 2 nieces; and a nephew.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill” Sommers.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 12:30 pm, Monday, June 19, 2017 at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church.  A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at 12:30 pm in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mimosa Hills Junior Golf Program, PO Box 677, Morganton, NC 28680-0677, the NCSD at Morganton Foundation, P.O. Box 1397, Morganton, NC 28680, or to the Glen Alpine United Methodist Church “Kitchen Crew”, P.O. Box 576, Glen Alpine, NC 28628.
