Thelma Smith, 95, of Morganton died Saturday, January 25, 2020. She was born on March 2, 1924 in Waterford, PA, to the late Charles Orlando Willey and Sylvia Boyd Willey. She was a member of Mull’s Grove Baptist Church. She was an excellent teacher and loved craft work. Every month, Thelma organized events for the seniors. She oversaw the church library. She enjoyed making quilts, crocheting afghans, and making cross stitch pictures. Thelma has made four elaborate dollhouses. She enjoyed looking at trees. Thelma was very hospitable with her home always open to entertain missionaries or visiting pastors.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa Dean Smith.

Thelma is survived by her daughters, Almeda Foy (Norman) and Kathleen Smith, both of Morganton, Nadean Hayes of Grove Port, OH, and Maralee Douglas (Rev. Murray) of Lawrenceburg, IN; nineteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2020 at Mull’s Grove Baptist Church. The service will be 3 p.m. in the church with Pastor Rocky McLendon and Rev. Murray Douglas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
