Steve W. Smith, 57, of Newton, NC passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 7, 2014.  Born in Burke County, NC on August 28, 1957, he was the son of Marvin Smith and the late Margaret Butler Smith of Morganton. Steve was a member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church.  He was a 1975 graduate of Freedom High School and graduated from N.C. State University with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.  While at NC State he was a member and president of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.  He worked at Duke Energy and was a past President and Young Engineer of the Year for Professional Engineers of North Carolina.  Steve was a huge supporter of the N.C. State Alumni Association and the Park Scholarships program.

Steve, trail name “Snuffy”, completed the Appalachian Trail and the Cycle Across North Carolina several times. He was an avid snow skier and also loved to golf. Steve was a member of the Catawba Country Club as well as a member of the Sandy Beach Shag Club. He taught the G.R.E and GMAT prep at Queen’s University in Charlotte.

A loving father, husband, and Wolfpack Fan, Steve is survived by his wife, Alice Blakley Smith. He has two daughters, Dr. Meghan Alexis Smith of Chapel Hill, NC and future Dr. Janet Rebecca Smith of Greenville, NC, a brother, Mike Smith of Goldsboro, NC, and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 11, 2014 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Rev. Barry Blakley and Mr. Mike Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Park Scholarships, NC State University, Campus Box 7474, Raleigh, NC 27695-7474 or to Professional Engineers of North Carolina Education Foundation, 1015 Wade Avenue, Suite A, Raleigh, NC 27605.
