Steve Ronder Crawford, 76, of Morganton, NC, passed away Friday, October 20, 2023.

Born in Avery County, NC on August 23, 1947, he was the son of the late Elmer Crawford and Ruth Virginia Hodges Crawford.

Steve was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family, life, and people. He was a man of integrity and was very knowledgeable about all things.

He was a man who loved Jesus, enjoyed studying his Bible, and was an active member of Praise Assembly of God in Glen Alpine. He was a witness everywhere he went and because of this, he gained a lot of spiritual children.

He enjoyed watching boxing, picking his guitar, riding through the mountains, and giving people nicknames. He will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Marcella Ollis Crawford; daughter, Sherry Causby; granddaughter, Chelsea Suttles (Landon); daughter-in-law, Jackie Crawford; extended granddaughter, Kelli; extended great-granddaughters, Kayla and Victoria; brother, George Edward Crawford (Linda); sister, Betty Fox; sister-in-law, Debbie Crawford; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by a son, Brian Crawford; brothers, Cecil (Pauline), Jimmy, and Wayne “Pete” Crawford; sisters, Jean Ollis (Phillip) and Helen Buchanan; and son-in-law, Jimmy Ray Causby.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Praise Assembly of God. The celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. in the church with Rev. Kevin Crawford and Rev. Boyd Biggerstaff officiating. Burial will follow in Park Hill Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vessels of Mercy of CCRP, P.O. Box 8399, Morganton, NC 28680.

The family would like to express their love and appreciation to the staff at the Valdese Cancer Center and 6th floor staff at UNC Heath – Blue Ridge for the wonderful care and love they provided to Steve. They became like family.

“For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:8

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

My heart goes out to this sweet family. Steve was always a joy to be around and lite up the room with his funny wit. Steve and my husband Ronnie were always picking at each other until my husbands unexpected passing. Now I can truly see Steve and Ronnie joyously pain-free picking on each other again in their heavenly home. Hugs and prayers to all the Crawford family.

This just broke my heart! Steve was always so good to me growing up, as Sherry and I were joined at the hip all through school and I spent many nights with this family. Steve was like a second dad to me as to many, and loved all his kids friends, and such a good man, and funny. Please know how much I love ya'll, and I am so very sorry! He loved the Lord with all his heart, and we know he is healthy now and praising his Jesus. Thank you Steve for treating me like your own! I sure will miss you! Love, Pam
