Sonia "Sandy" Smith Johnson, 44, of Morganton, NC entered into eternity after a long and difficult battle with brain cancer. Born in Burke County, NC on July 30, 1969, she was the daughter of Riddle Smith of Morganton and Candy Harris Smith of Morganton. Sandy was a very active member of Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Freedom High School and of Western Piedmont Community College with a Certified Medical Assistant Degree. She worked in several doctor offices and at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center. She was a devoted and loving mother and daughter.In addition to her parents, Sandy is survived by her son, Nicholas A. Johnson of the home; a number of cousins; many friends; and her feline companions, Sophie, Prissy, and Toby.Sandy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry "Sonny" Harris, Mary Seagle Harris, Harold R. Smith, and Bertha Robinson Smith.

The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Yvonne Thurmond and John Smiley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence of her mother, Candy, 2109 Goodman Lake Road, Morganton.Memorial contributions may be made to the Nicholas A. Johnson Education Fund, c/o State Employees Credit Union, 130 Carbon City Road, Morganton, NC 28655.The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to many people and organizations including: Grace and Valdese Hospitals, Burke Hospice, Dr. Doug Thompson, Dr. Greg Jones, Tracy Chapman, PA, Atty.
