Silver Miller Abernethy, 92, of Drexel passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018.  Born in Ashe County, NC on October 14, 1925, she was the daughter of the late George and Mae Miller.  Silver was an active member of Drexel First Baptist Church and had served as church librarian.  She was a retired teacher, having worked at Drexel High School and Drexel Junior High.  She taught English and later was the librarian.  Silver will be remembered for her beautiful smile and gentle ways.

Mrs. Abernethy is survived by her sons, Rev. Ralph “Dolph” Abernethy and wife, Sue, of Conover, NC and George Miller Abernethy and wife, Caroline, of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Sarah Abernethy Hoyle and husband, Joe, of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Jamin Hoyle, Brendan Hoyle, Anna Hoyle, Larisa Hoyle, Luke Abernethy, Katie Abernethy, Emmi Abernethy, and Joshua Abernethy; great-grandchildren, Emma Foster, Noah Hoyle, Lily Hoyle, and Charlotte Hoyle; brother, Jim Miller of West Jefferson, NC; sister, Betty Miller Monroe of New Jersey; and numerous nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents, Silver was preceded in death her husband of 62 years, Ralph A. Abernethy, Jr.; brothers, Allen and Harry Miller; and sisters, Sallie Scott, Georgia Bryant, Mary Nell Weaver, and Hazel Hodges.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Drexel First Baptist Church.  The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Michael Duncan officiating.  Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
