Savannah Smith Cooper, 88, of Morganton died Sunday, February 3, 2013 at her home. Born May 10, 1924 in Buncombe County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Ernest E. and Vistie Hawkins Smith. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Savannah spent her life taking care of and helping others. She was a skilled seamstress and crafts maker and enjoyed teaching others how to make many things. She loved to travel. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Cooper, Sr.; sons, James Albert Cooper, Jr. and Larry Cooper; brothers, Hershel, Virgil, Hubert, and Ernest E. Smith; sisters, Ruby S. Ward and Lorene Metcalf.Surviving to cherish her memory are sons and their wives, Lester and Donna Smith of Drexel, Ellis and Shelly Cooper, and Phillip K. and Edna Cooper all of Morganton; a daughter, Brenda Cooper Braswell and husband, Jeff of Valdese; grandchildren, Randall, Stephen, Amelia, and William Cooper, Justin and Danielle Smith, Aaron Braswell, and Katelyn Murphy; a brother, Mark Smith of Mobile, AL; a sister, Mary Ann Henderson of Greenville, TN; and a number of nephews and nieces.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Grace Baptist Church with the Reverends Marty Bess and Randall Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Nebo, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sossoman Funeral Home & Crematory Center. At other times the family will be at Mrs. Cooper’s Salem Dr. home. Memorial gifts may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
