Sarah Lorene Smith Dobson, 90, of Morganton, NC, passed away Monday, August 4, 2025.
Born in Burke County, NC on November 15, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Marley Walter Smith and Eliza Mae Whitener Smith Greene.
Sarah was a devoted member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in numerous roles. She was a devout Christian wife, mother, and Mawmaw who dearly loved her family. She loved Jesus and her church. Even when her memory failed in the end, she never forgot to praise and worship her savior.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Vickie Icard (Dean) and Lori Mosteller (Chuck); grandchildren, Chris Ratliff (Leslie), T.J. Ratliff (April), Billy Stamey (Tina), Betsy Garst (Ian), Sara Puckett (Jonathan), and Lindsey Moretz (Dustin); great-grandchildren, Trevor Ratliff (Madison), Davin Ratliff (Alana), Bryson Ratliff (Chloe), Grayson Ratliff, Tanner Taylor, Finley Garst, Elliott Garst, Lincoln Garst, Jackson Puckett, Georgia Puckett, Everly Puckett, Harper Puckett, Maddox Moretz, Mason Moretz, and Maraleigh Moretz; great-great-grandchildren, Marynn Ratliff, Tucker Ratliff, and Adalynn Ratliff; sisters-in-law, Betty Smith and Shirley Dobson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton “J.C.” Dobson, Jr.; brother, Ned Smith (Loretta) and Donald E. Smith; brother-in-law, Bobby Dobson; and step-father, Verne S. Greene.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, August 7, 2025 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the church with Rev. Jonathan Puckett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family would like to express their appreciation to VIA Hospice for all of their love, support, and care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Via Health Partners or to Samaritan’s Purse.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Such a amazing Christian lady! Blessed to have been able to know her, welcome home!
Lorene was a sweet, kind, loving person. She always made us feel welcome and loved everybody. Her smile would always light up the room when she walked in. We are sorry for your loss and praying for the family. We know she is resting in the arms of the lord.

Lorene was like a sister I never had. We worked together for many years. We ate supper together on the job.We prayed together and for each other. I'm not going to make it to the funeral but I will donate to Samaritans Purse for her. See you in heaven my dear friend. Love you as always. Will pray for you Vickie and Lori. She was love in truest form.
I went to church with Lorene several at Pleasant Hill and she was such a woman of God. We met on Monday nites for prayer meetings and she never missed many of them. Precious memories I will carry with me forever. Love and prayers to all the family. Love, Kathy Duncan
