Russell S. Baker, "Buss", 95, of Valdese, NC passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 following a period of declining health. Born in Burke County, NC on December 22, 1915, he was the son of the late Riley Bristol Baker and Carrie Powell Baker. Russell was a U.S. Army veteran of the Pacific Theatre of WWII. As a lifelong member of Enon Baptist Church, he was a choir member and a member of the Brotherhood. A woodworking craftsman, he was a retired employee of Drexel Heritage Furnishings, plant #60. Russell was an avid gardener and rabbit hunter. For over 30 years, he and his wife, Louise, were devoted caregivers for their grandchildren.Russell is survived by his son, Gregory R. ?Greg? Baker and wife, Kim Ritchie Baker, of Drexel, NC; grandchildren, Natalie E. Baker of Drexel and Bryant R. Baker and wife, Pamela, of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Louise Perry Baker, and brothers, Howard and Bristol Baker. He also had a sister, Bonnie Seagle.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 9, 2011 at Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Garner and Chaplain Kenny Swanson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.Memorial contributions may be made to Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658 or to Enon Baptist Church, 2059 Enon Road, Morganton, NC 28655.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
