Ruby Kate Wellman, 81, of Morganton, NC passed away Friday, April 3, 2026.
She was born in Cleveland County, NC on June 26, 1944. Ruby was a member of Walker’s Chapel Baptist Church. She dearly loved her family, especially her grandchildren. Ruby enjoyed gardening and canning, and she was an exceptional craftswoman. She could cook anything you’d desire.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Allen Wellman, Kimberly Buckner (Jimmy), and Patricia Messer (David); grandchildren, Ashley Huffman (Melissa), Crystal Plemmons (Brad), Guy “Mikie” Huffman (Holly), Josh Buckner (Kennedy), Bradley Messer (Sarina), Sarah Hampton (Johnny), Casey Wellman, and Tasha “Nikki” McCall (Andy); twenty-seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; siblings, Sharon Cook (Jessie) and Revonda Leatherman; and numerous extended family.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Sanford Wellman; and her older sister, Jean Moore.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dysartsville Baptist Church, 24 Clubhouse Road, Nebo, NC 28761, Trinity Baptist Church, 216 Shelburne Road, Asheville, NC 28806, or to Walker’s Chapel Baptist Church, 5292 Walker Chapel Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Allen, Pat & Kim.... I am extremely sorry for your loss. I know there are no words that could fill the space but know Aunt Ruby is Home with Uncle Claude and the rest of the family. Rejoicing with the Angels in the Light of Christ. Sitting at the hem of His garments forever feeling His Love Peace Grace & Righteousness. Ohhhh what a day it was, no more pain, no more sorrow. Ruby and her husband Claude were very special people to me and my late husband, Leonard Abee. They were the best employer I ever worked for in their upholstery business. I also loved setting up at craft shows with Ruby. Precious memories will never be forgotten. My prayers go up for the family. Blaka Abee

Ruby was a sweet lady. Always had a smile on her face when I saw her. She will be missed by so many. Sending prayers to her family.
Ruby was a very special person to w. I was honored and blessed to call her my friend. While my heart hurts that she has gone on I am very happy for her to be with Claude and free from pain. Thoughts and prayers to all of her family.
