Roy Avery, 84, of Morganton, NC died Saturday, March 22, 2014. Born in Burke County, NC on February 22, 1930, he was the son of the late Robert James Avery and Florence Hemphill Avery. Roy was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, member of Zion Baptist Church, and owned and operated Avery Plumbing. He loved his cattle and land, and he was a hard-working, honest man.Roy is survived by his children, Gary Avery and his wife, Carol, Tamara Nicholson and her husband, Jeff, Keith Avery and his wife, Penny, and Jack Avery and his wife, Donna, all of Morganton; six grandchildren, Kelli Weathers and her husband, Ryan, Jonathan Avery, Kaleb Nicholson and his wife, Jennifer, Tyler Avery, Issac Avery, and Austin Avery; great-grandchildren, Graham and Hudson Weathers; a sister, Jean Reynolds of Monterey, California; and his special friend, Ruth Bumgarner.In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Avery and his wife, Louise.

The funeral will be held at 12:00 pm, Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Parker and Rev. Keith Rose officiating. Burial will follow in Avery Family Cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30am until noon prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
