Rodney A. Lowery, 68, of Morganton passed from life into eternal rest on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Born in Boone County, WV on January 2, 1945, he was the son of Dorothy Waller Lowery of Uneeda, WV and the late Leonard Delbert Lowery. Rodney was raised in the coal-mining community of Wharton, WV. He attended Van High School and later went to work in the coal mines at the age of 17. On January 24, 1964, he married Carolyn Lee Greene, and have since spent 49 loving years together.While living in West Virginia, he was an active member of the United Mines Workers Association. He belonged to local union #781 where he was treasurer for many years. Rodney was also an active member of the Madison Masonic Lodge #162 and belonged to the Wharton Barrett Volunteer Fire Department. He was also very proud to be a member of the Eastern Associated Coal Mine Rescue Team and was the lead team member for several rescues. After working 37 years in the mines, he decided to retire and join his wife and family full-time in Morganton.Rodney attended and was a member of Gibbs Chapel Wesleyan Church where he was an active member of the choir and belonged to the R-12 Men’s Group.Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Carolyn Greene Lowery of the home; daughters, Cindy and Jennifer Lowery, both of Morganton; grandsons, Brett Spratt, Taylor Cabell, Elijah Dickens, Dustin Cabell, and Dakota Tullis; a brother, Delbert Lowery and his wife, Joann, and their son, Mike, of Barrett, WV; a sister, Patty Price and her husband, Dudley, of Uneeda, WV; and a special canine friend, Grover.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Gibbs Chapel Wesleyan Church with Rev. Roger Brackett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
