Robert Lee Rhoney, 96, of Morganton, NC, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Born in Burke County, NC on March 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Edgar “Ed” Rhoney and Myra Louise Dixon Rhoney.

Robert was a veteran of the US Navy and spent many years away earning a living and taking care of his family. He retired from General Motors in 1985. Mr. Rhoney was an avid fan of the UNC Tar Heels and the Boston Red Sox.

Mr. Rhoney is survived by his son, Rick Rhoney; grandson, Grady Rhoney; great-grandsons, Tyler, Benson, and Brayden Rhoney; brothers, Luther Rhoney (Peggy) and Henry Rhoney (Vivian); and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Bridges Rhoney; brothers, Billy Rhoney (infant) and Carlo Rhoney; sisters, Clyde Rhoney (infant), Gladys Rhoney Taylor, Lucille Rhoney Griffin-Eaker, Betty Rhoney Bradshaw-Lowery, Pearl Rhoney Haynes-Baird, Nettie Rhoney Secrest, and Josephine “Jody” Rhoney Taylor.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Bethel Road Methodist Church. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. in the church with Dr. Pat Looper officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the US Navy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Robert’s beloved Bethel Road Methodist Church, 1338 Bethel Road, Morganton, Nc 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
