Rita Ann DeVinney, 80, of Morganton, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
Born in Sullivan County, TN on May 18, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Grant William Trent and Annie Lee Smith.
Rita was an active member of Smyrna Baptist Church. She worked for several years at Carolina Shoe and Premier Hosiery, before working and retiring from Broughton Hospital. She loved cooking for and spending time with her family and spending time with her feline companions.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Trent DeVinney; grandchildren, Cooper, Madison, and Andrew DeVinney; great-grandchildren, Sydney and Gabe DeVinney; and a number of cousins, extended family, and friends.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her step-father, Horace “John” Smith; husband, William “Duck” DeVinney; and brother, Bob Trent.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 until 5 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Amorem Hospice (amoremsupport.org/donate).
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Family- Ms. Rita was one of the sweetest most loving women I ever had the chance to meet. She always believed in doing what was right and fair even if the two didn't always match up at Broughton Hospital. She cared for everyone every day. I know her family was so special to her. I will miss her and will always cherish her memory!

Rita was one of the kindness people you could ever have known. What a Heart she had for others. Rita took care of everyone, but herself. Her needs were last. I know All her Family was waiting for her. What a Celebration they are having. I LOVED YOU RITA ♥️
Rita was a DREAR COUSIN, Who was ALWAYS A CARING FAMILY MEMBER. SHE LOVED her Family To NO LIMIT.. SHE WILL BE SURELY MISSED. We will Cherish all the Memories we made. Rest in Peach DEAR HEART. I SILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.
