Ray McDonald Ward, Sr., 73, of Laurel Haven Ave., Morganton, NC died Monday, September 25, 2006 at Burke Hospice & Palliative Care Center in Valdese. He was born May 17, 1933 in Avery County, NC, and was a son of the late Homer Ward and Vida Ellen Wise Ward. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Ward; and a number of half-brothers and half-sisters. Ray was a retired employee of Portable Equipment. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved country music.

Ray is survived by his wife, Emily Wiseman Ward of the home; sons, Ray Ward, Jr. and wife, Revonda, and Tracy Ward and wife, Chris, all of Morganton; a daughter, Mary Ellen Orders and husband, Johnny, of Morganton; grandchildren, Donna Silvers and husband, Jeremy, Jason Reed and wife, Laura, Jeremy Reed and wife, Lauren, Jessie Ward, Ashley Ward, Christina Ward, Hailey Ward, and Hannah Ward; great grandchildren, Dillon Johnson, Destiny Silvers, Luke Fisher, Ben Fisher, and Jake Reed; a sister, Ruth Duncan of Nebo, NC; a sister-in-law, Wilma Ward; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at Laurel Haven Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Lawing officiating. Burial will follow at the Barrier Family Cemetery in Jonas Ridge, NC. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the church. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 5128 Laurel Haven Avenue, Morganton. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
