Philip “Poncho” Leonard, Sr., 62, of Morganton passed away Monday, January 28, 2019.  Born in Burke County, NC on May 27, 1956, he was the son of Lillian Marie Cannon Leonard of Morganton and the late Jack Hardie Leonard.  Poncho was a member of Calvin Heights Baptist Church.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.  He also enjoyed helping others, especially with his beloved granddaughter.

In addition to his mother, Poncho is survived by his son, Philip Marcus Leonard, Jr. (Christie); granddaughter, Lillian “Lily” Kay Leonard; sisters, Mitzy Lancaster (Clyde), Susan Orders (Mike), and Robi Baker (Keith); nieces, Jennifer Holden (Stephen) and Christina Holden (Sam); and great-nephews, Alan Michael Holden, Luke Holden, and Caleb Holden.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Bridge42 Church Cemetery with Rev. Justin Cunningham officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the nursing and medical staff of the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit at Grace Hospital for their care and service.
