Phifer Ervin Murphy, 90, of Morganton, NC, peacefully passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025 and walked into the arms of Jesus.

Born in Burke County, NC on April 9, 1935, he was the son of the late John Walter Murphy and Dallas Zora Murphy.

Phifer was a loving man who was never afraid to speak his mind. He lived by his faith, was quick-witted, and always knew how to make you laugh. Mr. Murphy shared countless stories from his childhood and family life that left lasting impressions. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy, and he was a hard-working man who held various positions with the state of North Carolina, including J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, Broughton Hospital, and the NC Department of Corrections. He retired in 1995 as a Corrections Officer Supervisor with 30 years of service. Phifer was a meticulous craftsman and handyman to many, and he was known for his attention to detail.

He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Wanda, where he longed to be for so many years. Though our hearts ache in his absence, we hold tightly to the memories made, the laughter, and the deep love he shared with his family and the promise of being reunited with him one day.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Donna Cannon; son, Ronnie Murphy (Ginger); adored grandchildren, Nicholas Long (Michelle), Ronnie Murphy, Jr. (Aubrey), Zachary Murphy, and Makayla Murphy; great-granddaughter, Meredith; dear friend, Patsy Shuffler; and a beloved nephew whom he shared a close bond with, Toney Stamey (Malisa).

In addition to his parents, Phifer was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wanda Murphy; six siblings; and a son-in-law, Jimmy Cannon.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Honors will be provided by the NC Department of Corrections Honor Guard, the US Navy, and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Phifer was an awesome man and a long time friend with my Uncle, Phifer Swink before he passed in 1969 or 1970. Prayers for the family for comfort and peace as he is in the Arms of Jesus now!
