Perry Lee Whisenant, 93, of Valdese, NC, passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021. Born in Burke County, NC on August 27, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Herman Lee Gurley and Rosa Lee Griffen Gurley. Perry was a devoted member of Christ United Methodist Church, Drexel, NC.
During a life fully lived, Perry was a friend and strength of comfort to many. She was a classy, vibrant woman and was dearly loved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She planned numerous covered dish dinners attended by neighbors, family, and friends. She was an avid traveler and had friends and loved ones scattered across the United States and Australia. Perry and her husband, Bill, were founding owners and operators of The Hush Puppy Fish House.
Her family will miss the presence of their mother who was such a strong influence in their lives. They are comforted by knowing she is received into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Perry is survived by her children, Vickie Lee Whisenant Buchanan (Richard) and Steven Gray Whisenant (Marilyn); grandchildren, Samantha Lee Buchanan McCoy (Jason) and Jennifer Whisenant Amundson (Paul); great-grandchildren, Savannah Lee McCoy, Bryson Lee McCoy, and Beret Gray Amundson.
In addition to her parents, Perry was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Gray Whisenant; son, Phillip Rhodney Whisenant; and an infant sister.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Friday, October 22, 2021 at Christ United Methodist Church. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. in the church with Rev. Cindy Wechter officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
