Peggy Young Brittain, 86, of Morganton passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, surrounded by her family. Peggy was born on October 13, 1937 in Bakersville. NC to the late Clyde N. Young, Sr. and Doris Edwards Young.

She moved to Morganton at an early age and attended Woman’s College of UNC and Lenoir Rhyne College and was a dedicated employee at the Burke County Health Department for more than 30 years where she created many lifelong friendships.

On April 6, 1958 Peggy married the love of her life, Kermit and they shared 63 years togethers before his passing in 2021. The main focus of her life was always her family. Her children, her grandchildren, and her great children were a source of great pride to her, and she loved them fiercely. Those who knew Peggy knew that she loved and was loved and never turned anyone away from her table. She saw the good in everyone (except a few politicians). She was a true sports fanatic and loved watching ACC basketball and Carolina Panthers football.

Peggy is survived by her son; Mark Brittain, her daughters; Missy Breland (Robert) of Virginia and Cindi Sutherland (Neil) of Florida, six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a brother; Michael Joe Young (Libby) of Hilton Head SC.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Cyrus Brittain, two grandsons; Sheldon and Derek Brittain, and a brother; Clyde N. Young, Jr.

No services are planned at this time.

The family will welcome any friends who would like to stop by, pay their respects and share memories at her home in Morganton through Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at Lake James.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Mark, Cindi and Missy, I was very sorry to hear about your mom. Peggy was one of my mother's best friends. They worked together for many years at the health department. I had dinner with your parents several times. They always made me smile. I hope your memories will help all of you at this difficult time. Blessing to the whole family. Trina Melton Barrier

Cindi, Mark, and Missy, I’m so sorry for your loss. No matter how old our parent is, or expected their death can be, we’re never ever ready to lose a parent. Just always reflect on what a blessing she was!! … for all of us! And I love that I got to know her so closely since childhood! She accepted me and Kim every summer as her own! She’s my second momma and always will be and I’m so sad she’s gone and so is my mom. Mom said she’s “ready to go” when I told her Aunt Peggy passed. They really were best of buddies through the years! And thank you for bringing her for all of the recent visits! They meant a lot to all of us. I love you all and her very very much❣️🙏🏻😍
