Ophelia Ann Hart, 88, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord and deceased family members on Friday, March 13, 2026.

Born in Carroll County, GA on June 1, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Jay Allen and Georgia Belle Williams Allen.

Ophelia was a devout Christian and lifelong member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church. An excellent cook and baker, she founded Open Hearts Bakery and published her own book, A Patchwork of Living and Oneness. Mrs. Hart also started the Smiles Program, a service which delivered meals to shut-ins. Hers was a life well-lived.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Allen Hart (Dawn Stephens) and David Michael Hart (Cynthia); grandchildren, Jennifer Michell McMahan and Tim Hart (Laura); five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, A.J. Allen (Jean).

In addition to her parents, Ophelia was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; daughter, Rachel Ann; grandson, Wesley; and siblings, Clarence, Zelma, Mary (Glen), George (Betty Sue), and Earl (Joyce).

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2026 in the fellowship hall of St. Matthews United Methodist Church. A celebration of Ophelia’s life will follow at 3 p.m. in the church with Rev. Jacob Lancaster officiating.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

My heart is sad at the passing of Ophelia. But I am also glad to know she is with the love of her life Melvin and Rachel. She is pain free now and happy. Jennifer, Allen and David I know you all will miss her so much but you have all your wonderful memories of her that will never go away.
