Oliver “Penny” Wayne Huffman, 81, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Born in Cleveland County, NC on June 29, 1943, he was the son of the late Oliver Alexander Huffman and Paulin Towery Huffman. Penny attended Sunnyside Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, Penny enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time at the pond in the South Mountains. He also enjoyed bluegrass festivals, a good get-together and fish fry, and working in the garden. Penny’s favorite activity was spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Huffman is survived by his wife, Bessie Ann Pritchard Huffman; grandchildren, Ashley Carpenter (Ambrose Duckworth), Athena Johnson (Jonathan), Adeline Steele, and Allison Steele; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Macie and Andrew Duckworth and Zoe Johnson; daughter-in-law, Michelle Steele; brother, Carl Huffman (Willie), (son, Randy and wife, Diane); sister, Evelyn H. Hunt (son, Allen Hudson and wife, Beth, and their children, and daughter, Cathy Jordan and husband, Ronnie, and their children; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Penny was preceded in death by his son, Joel Carpenter; nephew, David Hunt; great-nephew, Jason Hudson; and great-niece, Alyssa Hunt.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, January 3, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Sunnyside Baptist Church with Revs. Clint Ewing and Randy Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sunnyside Baptist Church.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
