Norman Wilson "Pete" McLean, 88, of Morganton died Thursday, September 23, 2010 at his home following a period of declining health. Pete was born in Caldwell County on February 11, 1922 and was a son of the late James William McLean and Farris Prestwood McLean. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and prior to the war, he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps. Pete was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church.Surviving are his wife, Cleo Stamey McLean of the home; sons, C. Norman McLean and his wife, Diane, Dwayne W. McLean, and Jerald E. McLean all of Morganton; daughters, Denise Holman and her husband, Scott of Lenoir and Margaret B. McLean of Morganton; brothers, Glenn McLean of Morganton and Dave McLean of Valdese; and a sister, Betty Lockee of Valdese. Pete also is survived by his grandchildren, Colby Denton, Spencer Hass, Laura England, Chase England, Tonya McLean, Lucy McLean, and Dwayne McLean, Jr. and by seven great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar, Sam, and John McLean and by sisters, Lizzie Cline, Lula Pope, Ada Bowman, and Julie McLean.The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverends Gary Cline and Steve Curtis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday. At other times the family will be at the home on Pax Hill Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690 or to Bethel Baptist Church, 3861 Pax Hill Rd., Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family.
