Nora Windom, 89 of Morganton passed peacefully Saturday, December 6, 2025, in Hickory, NC, following an extended period of illness.

Born in Burke County on December 29, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Tom C. Thomas and Florence Hemphill Thomas. Nora worked in the garment industry as a seamstress.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Johnny Windom, brothers Preston Thomas, Waymond Thomas, Jackson Thomas, Tommy Thomas, Richard Thomas, and Andrew Thomas. Nora was also preceded in death by her three sisters Marian Thomas, Eva Avery Thomas, and Jacqueline Thomas.

Nora had no children but was loved dearly by her step-children and step-grandson and a village of nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.

Homegoing services will be held at Sossoman Funeral Home on December 13, 2025. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., and the funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Tommy Carpenter and Audrey Gwynn officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

So very sorry to learn of Mrs. Nora's transitioning. She was always just the sweetest person. She was always looking after my Aunt Willie Avery as they were in the same Nursing Home Facility. I offer my sincere condolences to the whole family. SIHP Mrs. Nora Windom.
