Nell Hollifield, 90, of Morganton, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

Born in Yancey County, NC on November 21, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Bowers Hoover and Ida Geneva Grindstaff Hoover.

Nell enjoyed painting, gardening, and swinging on the back porch listening to the birds. She was a huge Duke basketball fan and a collector of many things.

Nell is survived by her daughter, Annie Geneva Hollifield of Asheville; numerous nieces and nephews; and her fur-baby, CatCat.

In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Jack Adam Hollifield; sisters, Maude Duncan, Pauline Loftis, and Wilma Winters; and brother, Herman Hoover.

A private family viewing will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow at 11 a.m., Saturday at Burke Memorial Park with Rev. Shawn J. Milburn officiating.

The family would like to thank the staff of Rose Hill Retirement Community for making her stay comfortable and pleasant.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rose Hill Recreational Fund or to the charity of your choice.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Nell loved flowers, painting, and improving the beauty in God's world for others to enjoy. Many years ago she secretly planted a calla lily near the front steps of my home, and when it blooms, I always remember her laughter when she was discovered as the contributor. What a beautiful memory to leave.
