MSG. Jack Stephens, 87, of Drexel, NC died Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Autumn Care of Drexel. Born in Burke County, NC on November 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Glenn Erwin Stephens, Sr. and Ethel Mae Stephens. Jack was a member of First Baptist Church in Drexel.Jack was a veteran of WWII and had 22 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. After his service, he moved to Knoxville, TN and managed stores in the Winn Dixie Chain. After he retired, he moved back to Drexel.Jack is survived by his sisters, Sue Evans and Edna Barger, both of Connelly Springs, and Ruth Bridges of Morganton; grandchildren, Susan Schwind, Cindy Randolph, Johanna Starrett, and Jennifer Drum; and ten great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Malla Lucille Goble Stephens; a daughter, Olivia Lynn Proffit; a son, O. Allen Duncan; a great-grandson, Reston Drum; and a brother, Glenn E. Stephens, Jr.The memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Drexel with Rev. Tito Madrazo officiating. Military honors will be provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 308, Drexel, NC 28619. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
