Miriam Butler Helms, 94, of Newton, NC, formerly of Morganton, NC, finished her race on Sunday, January 25, 2026. She was born on April 16, 1931 in Burke County to the late W.E. Butler and Eula Walker Butler. She was a former member of Catawba Valley Baptist Church but had attended the First Baptist Church in Morganton. Miriam worked at Broughton Hospital and later moved to Emerald Isle where she worked at Carteret County Hospital. She moved back to Drexel, NC in 2008 to help care for her sister.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Helms; brothers, Billy and John Ervin Butler; sister, Minnie (Jinx) Garrison, Katherine Lockridge, and Virginia Connelly.
She is survived by her son, William Helms II (Celia); daughters, Martha Helms and Susan Wingfield; grandchildren, Ronnie Wicker, Sam Ennett (Kelly), Ben Helms and Hunter Helms (Amanda); great-grandchildren, William Helms, Caleb Ennett, Cassidy Ennett, Fayden Thompson, Tyler Shown.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
